It was a day in August 2001 when the Singapore Art Museum had an unusually large number of visitors . In the exhibition hall, there was a crowd with some people, bending over a glass case containing a long scroll. All of them were smiling with several even chuckling. A few of the viewers were excitedly pointing to some specific parts of the scroll, whispering comments to the persons next to them that brought wide smiles and even laughter. They were obviously delighted with what they were seeing.

This is a usual scene whenever Huang Yao’s paintings of children were exhibited. On this particular day, the long scroll exhibited in Huang Yao Retrospective at the Singapore Art Museum was Huang Yao’s painting of the ‘Hundred Children at Play in Winter'. It is one of the four scrolls in color – one for each season that was completed in 1977.
