Huang Yao's Calligrapahy

All of Huang Yao's calligraphic work was executed upside down; Huang Yao called this Chuyun shu. It is a technique he discovered in his attempt to imitate handwriting of children so as to capture the childlike innocence inherent in human nature, first used with his cartoon Niubizi. Later, through perseverance, diligent practice together with the mastery of writing ancient scripts, he developed a clumsy style of writing that has an ancient feel.

Niu Bizi begins to appear regularly in Xinwen Bao. One account of why Niu Bizi was created was the popularity of cartoon strips. When Xinwen Bao found out that Huang Yao could paint, they asked him to do a cartoon strip.

It is recorded by Wei Shaochang that a Niu Bizi book was published by Qun Zhong Publishers. 18 September 1935 is the 4th anniversary of the Japanese Invasion of Manchuria. This book is not available yet in the Huang Yao Foundation archives.

Niubizi 1 Cartoon Book

4 April 1936 ‘Niu Bizi 1’was published by Niu Bizi Company . The book cover cleverly uses several types of bread and vegetables to construct Niu Bizi and tells us what type of bread and vegetables to buy to construct this. For the bread Niu Bizi, it can be seen one big round bread for face along with 4 buns and cotton candy for the nose, 4 toothpicks for the hair and 3 chocolate for eyes and mouth. In ‘Niu Bizi 1’, the forward is written by the Wan brothers, “Analysing Niu Bizi”.

4 April 1936 'Niu Bizi 2’ was also published by Niu Bizi Company. In these two books there is a main cartoon strip with a small Niu Bizi character on the side. Niu Bizi is a rather funny fellow always getting into trouble. In ‘Niu Bizi 2’, the forward is written by the Wan brothers, “Why Niu Bizi Needs to be Created?, How to draw Niu Bizi”.

Niubizi Granting Happiness Cartoon Book

10 October 1930 Publication of ‘Granting Happiness’ by Niu Bizi Company. The cover is that of the God of Prosperity, wearing his banner, to bestow happiness. Under the cover, the God of prosperity’s banner says, there is no more happiness to bestow. In this book, Niu Bizi is not a cartoon strip in frames but takes on the flexibility to represent other forms, including tiger Niu Bizi, Buddha Niu Bizi and so on. Huang Yao cleverly uses common idioms and poems with a twist to the modern context.

4 April 1937 Publication of ‘Niu Bizi 4’ by Niu Bizi Company. The cover is Niu Bizi in western military uniform raising his champagne glass. Huang Yao wrote a short note at the end of the book, stating his intention to hold a “International Children’s Niu Bizi Exhibition”, he asked children to submit their drawings about the following topics, ‘Life in the New Republic’, ‘Save the Country’, ‘Common Knowledge’, ‘Science’, ‘Health’, ‘Sports’, ‘Education’, ‘Work’ and “Farming’.

Huang Yao publishes, ‘Niu Tou Manhua’ (Ox Head Magazine), Volume 1. It is published by Niu Tou Manhua She (Ox Head Magazine Company). The magazine has 36 pages consisting of cartoons done by Huang Yao, cartoons and articles done by his friends and cartoons submitted by children. There is also a page of cartoons jointly done by Huang Yao and his friend, Zhang Leping, where Sanmao is bullying Niu Bizi.

Niubizi If I Were 2 Cartoon Book

10 July 1937 ‘If I Were… 2’ is published by Niu Bizi Comapny. The cover is that of a Niu Bizi African Woman holding her breasts up, the subtitle of the book is “The Perfect Beauty”. Here Niu Bizi comments on society through the titles such as, “If I Were a Movie Star”, “If I Were Crazy”, “If I were Poor”, “If I Were Chang Er”.
