1777 - 1848 Huang Antao - Huang Yao's Great-Great Grandfather
Once I went to a bookstore because of an appointment to look at some paintings. I did not expect that among the paintings I would find something written by my great-great grandfather, Huang Antao.
1917 to 1933 Huang Yao's Early Life
Huang Yao describes some of his childhood in an article entitled, “My Father”.
1930s Xu Beihong
“Du Yun” produces a type of brown paper, the last time I saw Xu Beihong in Guilin, he liked to use “paper from Du Yun” to paint his horses.

Huang Yao wrote that he often had meals with artists such as……. At the vegetarian restaurant of…. In Shanghai. He was the art editor of Shanghai Post and would have had access to such people.
1930s Guan Liang
Huang Yao and Guan Liang most likely would have known each other in Shanghai. In Chen Jiying's article, “In Memory of Huang Yao”, he writes that Huang Yao, Ni Yide, Guan Liang, Ye Qianyu and Ding Cong are old friends.

In our records, this seal was carved by Wang Shoupeng (1875-1929). Inscription was probably done by another person as Wang had already passed away in 1930s.

Huang Yao and Ye Qianyu met in Shanghai in the 1930s as they were both involved in cartoons. They were both on the organizing committee as well as were exhibited at the 1936 First National Cartoon Exhibition in Shanghai.

1930s Ni Yide
In Chen Jiying article “In Memory of Huang Yao” did mention Huang Yao,Ni Yide, Guan Liang, Ye Qianyu and Ding Cong they are old friends.
1930s Zhang Henshui
Huang Yao wrote in his article, he got sick rested in Hankou for about a month before Zhang Henshui (colleague in Xin Wen Bao) and him boarded Minsheng’s ship there. He wrote that it took them about 10 days to reach Chongqing.
1930s Zhang Leping
Zhang Leping (1910 - 1992) Cartoonist. 1930s influenced by Ye Qianyu, did cartoons for Shi Dai Man Hua and Du Li Man Hua. During WWII joined Anti-Japanese Cartoon Propaganda Team.
1930s Wang Yiting
The Foundation has discovered an unpublished draft of an article titled, "My painter friend, Wang Yiting". Huang Yao was a regular and often met his friends from the art circle at "Gong De Lin", a vegetarian restaurant (in the 1930s had an upstairs area for painters to gather, paint and have discussions).
1933 Huang Yao's Outings
In Bi Keguan’s “Manhua de Hua yu Hua” (2002), he interviewed a number of pioneer cartoonists. In one of the articles, Mu Yilong, Huang Yao’s colleague said that every Sunday, Huang Yao arranged with him to bring some young friends such as Chen Juanjuan, Ge Zuozhi for an outing. Sometimes Li Yanzhi’s children, Li Huilang and Li Huimin as well as Yan Duhe’s son, Maomao will come along.

November 15 1935 The Cartoon Club
The Cartoon Club in Shanghai was established by Zhang Guanyu, Zhang Zhengyu, Ye Qianyu, Lu Shaofe, Zhang Yinzhao, Huang Yao, Huang Miaozi, Liang Baibo, Wang Dunqing and Zhang Leping.
December 25 1935 Tian Tian
Publication of ‘Tian Tian’ by Zhou Tianlai. Tian Tian is a children’s book, the pictures were done by Huang Yao, the design by another cartoonist Zhang Yingchao and the title was written by Feng Zikai.

Zhang Yingchao was a famous and active cartoonist in the 1930s Shanghai. He served in the committee for the First National Cartoon Exhibition in 1936.
