a small sample of Huang Yao wide range of artwork is represented here,
hopefully sufficient to demonstrate that he was an accomplished and
creative calligrapher, painter and with humor to produce his Wenzi hua.
The mastery of skills required for these creations can be seen in his
Calligraphy, Classical Chinese paintings, and cultural adaptation of
the Chinese painting techniques and Cartoons. While these together were
needed as foundation of Wenzi hua, the Ziyou hua was likely an extension
of it. Many of the paintings here were accompanied by a short passage written by Huang Yao about a particular painting or type of paintings, the way to paint, to appreciate the paintings, the master calligraphers or painters in Chinese art history, etc. These passages were either from the articles he wrote and published in newspaper, of which he had his own column, and were later put together in the book Moyuen Suibi or from unpublished manuscripts Shiyong Huagao (Practical Painting Techniques). |
